Amy Carlson was born in Glen Ellyn in
Illinois and spent her childhood in Chicago. Amy resided in GlenEllyn,
Illinois, until she was in junior college. There, her family also lived in the
Middle East, where her parents, Bob (and Barb) taught at American School. Amy
is the youngest of three siblings: sisters Betsy and Lori and brother Joe. Amy
has traveled extensively across Europe with her family , and independently. Her
parents were teachers so they could spend every summer camping together and
travel all across the United States. They've camped in every state, except
Alaska. Amy traveled to Rwanda for aid with relief efforts following the 1994
war. Amy was a talented actor in school plays , and she won writing contests.
She was a talented athlete during high school, and was a participant in the
very first 3200-meter relay at the Illinois girls track. After an injury, she
went back to university and was a part of the stage, starting with Lanford
Wilson’s “Fifth of July” and later directing Wallace Shawn's "Aunt Dan and
Lemon. Amy was a Knox College student from Galesburg, Illinois. She graduated
with a B.A. East Asian history with a particular focus on Theater. She moved to
Chicago shortly after and then studied Improv at the Improv Olympic, and performed
in the theater at The Actor's Center. An acting contract on the now defunct
soap show Another World (1964) moved her to NYC immediately following her
graduation. She was nominated for the "Outstanding Supporting Actress in a
Daytime Drama Series" category for Daytime Emmy Award. Her most memorable
roles have been those performed by strong women, including Alex Taylor in Third
Watch (1999), Maggie Pistone ((2000)), Katie Owen and Tom Berenger in
Peacemakers(2003) and Linda Reagan in Blue Bloods(2003). Carlson lives in New
York City, with Syd Butler who is her husband and the bassist for Les Savy Fav.
She is also the owner of Frenchkiss Records, an independent music label, and
works as a part-owner. Amy continues to pursue different and unique jobs in the
film industry.
